About the position:



The part-time Teaching Artist will design and teach lessons for National Queer Theater’s free after school program Staging Pride: Queer Youth Theater. Reporting to Founding Artistic Director Adam Odsess-Rubin, the Teaching Artist will work closely with partner organization Hetrick-Martin Institute’s Drama Therapy program to implement high-quality theater education curriculum. This position will be in-person at Hetrick-Martin Institute (2 Astor Place, New York City) approximately 4 hours per week, two days per week, between the hours of 3:30pm-7pm, and remote for 4 hours per week for planning.



This position will start in September, with in-person instruction beginning in October with twice weekly after school workshops. The semester will culminate in a public sharing in NYC in December 2025.



Program Goals:



Safety in community: Build a safe community space amongst queer youth and adults to provide networks of support.



Learning: Teach LGBTQ history and culture.



Pride: Foster positive self-esteem through skill-building, expression, and theatrical performance.



Core Responsibilities:



Develop and write program curriculum for 24 workshops for LGBTQ+ youth ages 13-18, working alongside program staff and partners. Share lesson plans at least 24 hours in advance of workshops.


Deliver high-quality in-person theater education workshops/classes based on program curriculum and goals.



Chaperone Broadway and Off-Broadway field trips and guest masterclasses.



Supervise and mentor part-time Education Intern/Teaching Assistant.



Devise and direct student-created performance in December 2025.



Communicate with students via official channels as needed between sessions.



Participate in training sessions and professional development opportunities.



Maintain strict student confidentiality.



Refer students to proper resources for mental and physical health needs.



An ideal candidate will have:



At least one year experience teaching middle or high school aged youth.



A strong passion for theater or LGBTQ+ youth development.



Experience working in intersectional LGBTQ+ communities.



Experience in lesson planning.



The ability to communicate and collaborate closely with a small team.



Demonstrated written and oral communication skills.


Commitment to anti-racist and Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) principles and practices.



Background in social work, Drama Therapy, or mental health counseling.
